  • Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound): A newer dual-action injection targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors, leading to even greater weight loss effects. Similarly to Semaglutide, it works by reducing appetite. 
  • Liraglutide (Saxenda): Originally developed for diabetes, this daily injection helps control appetite. It works by moderating the hormones from the gut that send hunger signals to the brain to make you feel full quicker. 

These injections slow digestion, regulate blood sugar, and reduce hunger, making it easier for you to eat less. They tend to be highly effective, with some people losing 15-20% of their body weight. However they are often expensive, often costing over $1,000 per month, and their side effects can be numerous.

Potential Side Effects 

All weight-loss solutions have some form of potential side effects. These can include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (common with GP-1 injections like Ozempic), increased heart rate and high blood pressure (with stimulants like phentermine), potential liver or kidney issues, headaches, dizziness, digestive issues, fatigue, abdominal pain. There is also a risk of dependency with certain appetite suppressants. These medications will be prescribed in ways to reduce the likelihood of these side effects occurring.

Some weight loss medications or injections can interact negatively with medicines you might already be taking like antidepressants. 

Not for Everyone

Unlike prescription drugs, many OTC options aren’t regulated by the FDA, meaning their effectiveness varies widely.

For example, caffeine supplements over the long term can actually contribute to weight gain through hormone imbalance and insulin resistance, it can also cause anxiety, sleep issues and increased heart rate. 

The popular OTC weight loss pill Orlistat has been known to cause gas, loose stools, oily stools, difficulty controlling bowel movements and irregular periods. It can also impact the absorption of certain other medications which can be dangerous.

One of the most important differences between prescription medicines and OTC supplements is their effectiveness. 

  • Prescription medications and injections are clinically tested and approved by the FDA. This means that they have undergone rigorous studies to prove their effectiveness. Long-Term Sustainability: Which is Easier to Maintain?

If you’re looking for substantial weight loss (especially if you’re obese or have a high BMI), prescription options – particularly injections – are far more effective than OTC solutions. Prescription medications are also much safer as they are heavily regulated, whereas OTC supplements can contain a lot of unknowns making them riskier. If you’re overweight but only looking to lose a few pounds, then an OTC supplement might provide the small boost that you need. They can be more effective if you pair them with healthy changes to your diet and activity levels, otherwise results will be modest at best. 

If you have a BMI over 30 (or 27+ with an associated health condition), prescription options like injections are likely to be most effective for you. 

Do You Have a Health Condition?

If you have diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure, some weight loss medications may not be safe for you to take. However, GLP-1 injections like Ozempic may be a great option for people with diabetes as they help to regulate blood sugar at the same time as promoting weight loss. 

It’s worth being careful with OTC supplements as these can interact negatively with medications you may already be taking. You should always consult a doctor before starting a new medication or supplement. 

Do You Prefer a Doctor Supervised Plan?

If you want professional guidance and regular check-ins, a prescription medication under medical supervision might be the best option.
